ESPERANTIST MILITANTS IN FRANCE

TRANSMISSION AND TRANSFORMATION OF A MILITANT CAUSE

Militantism for international language Esperanto is rarely studied. It is therefore one of the few causes which can boast about hundred twenty years of history and militant tradition. This dissertation aims to show recent evolutions of the movement promoting Esperanto, through field survey among French Esperantists. We particularly will be interested in transmission of cause’s worths, in their personal appropriation from the agents, but also in recent transformations of the cause. Among them, entry in political arena during European election in 2004 represents the most outstanding manifestation.

Le militantisme en faveur de la langue internationale espéranto n’est que très rarement étudié. Il s’agit pourtant d’une des rares causes pouvant se targuer de cent vingt ans d’histoire et de tradition militante. Ce mémoire vise à montrer les évolutions récentes du mouvement de promotion de l’espéranto à travers une enquête de terrain menée parmi des espérantistes français. Nous nous intéresserons notamment à la transmission des valeurs de la cause, à leur appropriation personnelle par les acteurs, mais également aux transformations récentes de la cause dont l’investissement de l’arène politique lors des élections européennes de 2004 constitue la manifestation la plus marquante.
